The Golden Render Contest!

sponsored by Caligari and AMD

Congratulations to Gene Gunderson, winner of the first                 Caligari Golden Render Award!

Gene was also selected as the focus of our One Man Show in April, 2001. An active member of the trueSpace community, Gene creates detailed images that showcase the power of trueSpace as well as spotlighting his own creativity. His exceptional artwork frequently reflects his passion for music, but Gene is also inspired by the natural world.

Although he wasn’t formally trained as an artist, Gene says he “creates images because I have to; it’s a need. I want my images to tell a ‘story,’ to ‘say something,’ and not just be a pretty collection of objects . . . Sometimes I succeed in that, sometimes I don’t, but I keep on trying.”

Gene’s stunning tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan’s life and music is rich with symbolism. The image was shown on an Austin SRV remembrance TV special by bassist Tommy Shannon as one of the items that best portrays his memory of Stevie Ray. When informed of the honors Gene received for the image, Mr. Shannon offered praise for the artist and his work:

"Gene, this is the most beautiful representation of Stevie's life that I've
ever seen. Thank you for understanding."

As he created this piece, Gene posted an extensive tutorial of the piece from conception to completion as a way to pay back all he has learned from the trueSpace community over the years. Gene received advice and assistance from several members of the community on the SRV tribute, and they are included in the Tutorial here.

Gene has been using Caligari products since trueSpace2 hit the market several years ago. He calls trueSpace his “favorite 3D rendering program,” commenting that “the best thing I can say about trueSpace is that it fits my brain like a glove.”

Caligari extends its sincerest congratulations to Gene on being selected the best of the best. Gene’s award is a state of the art, ultimate rendering workstation from AMD.
