trueSpace is now 10 years old, and we have been taking a look
back over that decade with the focus squarely on the most
important topic - our users!
We invited users to
let us know their story, and why they thought they might be the
Most Loyal User, and we are pleased to show the winner and
runners-up chosen for the first quarter of 2004!
First Quarter Winner : Gordon Stanton |

Most loyal? If by that you mean determined, I might be
considered as such! The reason I own a computer is
because I saw trueSpace2 and an old dream came true. The
dream was after trying my younger brother's Commodore 64
years earlier...yuck! I said to myself "If ever a
computer could do art, real art, I would be interested
in learning to use a computer."
The only drawback was that computers were expensive,
and I had no money for such luxuries. Then in the year
after seeing trueSpace2, I had the misfortune of coming
down with a rare eye disease, dashing my hopes of any
future, never mind the hope of using or owning a
computer. Before the next year had passed, I had been
pronounced legally blind.
|
| I could only see like you would on an
airplane looking at the world below through a dense fog
or mass of cloud, catching a glimpse of the earth below
through holes that quickly clouded over. Eventually, I
was given an old computer by one of my brothers as
something to help keep me occupied, not that I could do
much with it. My friend put a trueSpace4 demo on the
computer for me, but it had a corrupt file so it didn't
really work properly. It was some time before I got
connected to the |
 |
| internet and found the
Caligari site, and only then did I have a new demo in my
hands, plus a deal to get the program at a price I could
afford...Now if I could only see... I used trueSpace
as a tool to motivate me to see, and as a reason to get
up in the morning. It gave me lots to think about, and
it gave me even more satisfaction when I achieved the
simplest operations. Before my illness, I used to paint
in oils, carve soapstone, create stained glass windows,
and work as a graphic artist for a time. The trades that
I worked in for years were metal and wood and
construction oriented, where design would come into play
and my drafting skills would be needed. Now I could no
longer do what I loved, working with my hands and tools
- but trueSpace has become the place to do all that for
me.

My eyes are somewhat like trueSpace,
getting better all the time! With trueSpace5 I was
able to design a machine for the place I used to work,
and oversee its creation on the shop floor, as well as
create the images that sold the job with nearly no
explaining. My eyes got worse for a time. Layers in
trueSpace6 brought me one step closer to feeling like
I could see like a normal person again. When my eyes
cleared |
| enough by trueSpace6.5 to
be able to actually see the selection box mouse-overs
with my magnifying glass to use them. what a great
feeling that was! Along the way I learned to build
computers and put together my dream machine over the
period of a few years, saving pennies until I build
the one that I use now with dual 19" monitors. and
trueSpace6.6.
I have learned a new trade thanks to trueSpace, and
I hope that might make me employable again, even
though that was not my intention originally when I
started to use the program! If I can find a role where
I can work at my own speed using trueSpace, then I
hope to be a productive employee once again!
|
| I enjoy helping others at the forum,
and how the community can all learn from each other.
Posting my art for others to discuss, and
'complaining' sometimes, make me feel a part of the
truespace community! I have my trueSpace web page,
where I have a few Shadermagic shaders and simple
tutorials available for others. Recently I created
a few virtual tools that I posted in the repository
to help others, as they help me to work visually
making modeling easier. trueSpace, with its visually
friendly interface, has given me a sense of freedom.
From my own |
 |
| experience, I would
claim it "approved by the visually impaired!" One of
my goals is to win the monthly gallery one day. I
think that if these things would be considered as
loyal, then they might just make me the MOST loyal! |

trueSpace is a good and solid partner for me. It is
important for me as owner of a small advertising
agency to keep an eye on my tools. My clients are
not interested in why something is not working, I
cannot tell them that the software I use has
problems - all they expect are good results from me.
|
 |
trueSpace accomplishes this for me
for years. I know it, I like it, I work with it.
Besides the technical aspects of the software, there
is also the great trueSpace community and the superb
employees at Caligari. To me they are more then just
unknown users or company members - they become
friends over the years. I know them, I like them, I
work with them. |

First Quarter Runner-Up : Richard Case

Richard
Case
Profession : Construction
Location : Indiana, USA
First trueSpace version used : trueSpace SE
Years using trueSpace : ???? - have completely
lost track!

It all started several years ago. After a purchase
of a brand new Pentium computer (not Pentium 4, or
3, or 2... just plain old Pentium!), I found a
little program called trueSpace SE. It came on a
small 3 1/4 disk and looked 'kinda cool'
After the installation process was through - I
was a god!!! Look at what I could do, WOW! I had
found my calling.
Then in what seemed like only a few weeks,
trueSpace1 came out. With Boolean operations, I
could subtract from my objects... I quickly grabbed
a copy of that program and went home to play with my
new toy.
trueSpace2 seemed like only a few months behind,
and then trueSpace3, progress was so fast! As you
can guess, money ran shy, so I could not get 4 or 5.
However, now things are better again, and I
purchased gameSpace.
gameSpace of course does not have the full
capabilities of trueSpace6.6, which is why I will
need to purchase iit to get my 'godhood crown' to
feel right again! Now that trueSpace3.2 is a
free download I installed it on my new Pentium 4
computer, and how things have changed since those
days now I can compare that version to gameSpace!
Anyway, over the years I have been a loyal
Caligari customer, and even received a trueClips CD
from Caligari for being a loyal customer.. that was
back when 'The trueSpace2 Bible' came out by IDG
books, which still sits on my book case.... or
was it when 'trueSpace for Dummies' came out? Hmmm,
details of thememories are fading after all this
time!
As you can see I have been loyal for many of years,
and I am looking forward to many more years. As many
of my emails to you have said, thanks for making
trueSpace, truly thank you. Even if I don't win,
I'll still have trueSpace3.2, and my new god-like
powers of creation in the form of gameSpace!
