Flavio Adriani

How long have you been using trueSpace?

I first learned about trueSpace in 1995 from an Englishman friend who loves 3D. When he left my country, he gave me the program as a gift. I worked with it and taught myself how to use it - I am a self-taught man about computer graphics.

What made you choose trueSpace above other applications?

I wanted a program that took into account the issue of cost of the software versus the benefits it gives you. For that reason I now use trueSpace for 80% of my work.

How do you use trueSpace in your workflow?

I start with creating some 2D plans made in CAD, or sometimes just a sketch and sending those to the cleint. Afterwar, I then construct the project in 3D with all the necessary details for a perfect junction with trueSpace. Woring in trueSpace I do a study of lights and textures and I send this as a solid rendering test to the client. If they like it, then the images are finished to be used as illustrations.

Do you make sketches or drawings of your projects first and then turn those into 3D, or do you start in 3D?

Well, I think the best is to do the sketches by hand or with 2D CAD. To think about the project at the same time as thinking about software and its commands is a difficult task! Freedom of expression still comes from drawing freely by hand. A good thing would be if the program was even more intuitive! (laughs…)

What has been your most exciting project?

I have a very good friend in Haifa (Israel). We participate and take part in design competitions around the world. It is wonderful get ranked among another people and to look for new ideas – we are always learning.

How does trueSpace help you get a job done faster and easier?

trueSpace is really a fast program, especially when the project requires changes. As I work alone commercially, I need fast and accurate tools. Unhappily, people want everything to be made fast but still be beautiful!

Could you list some of the clients you have done work for?

In Brazil I have done work for SHM architecture, Roberto Leme & Evandra Victorio, Jose Luis Porta, Sonia Burgos Pomaro, Luis Carlos Silva, HMK archictecture, etc. In In Israel-Haifa I have worked with Joseph Cory, architect / Geotectura.

What would you like to achieve with your work in future? Any clients you would like to work for, any particular type of buildings you would like to design?

I want to always do good work and illustrations, and to study hard too so I can help people to realize their dreams, and it is important to look at things that happen in nature. I dream of working on an illustrative, functional, self-sufficient big project for areas with problems such as earthquakes, tsunamis, flood - these are ase need so much help from architecture.

What changes do you see happening in the future for architects and those involved in architectural design?

The changes are going very fast! Recyclable materials, nanotechnology - physics, chemistry have news every day so the architect needs to know these elements and how to apply them in architectural areas. The world is changing and we need to join ideas and concepts from different disciplines.

Do you also use 3D as a hobby, or just for work? If so, what sort of renders do you produce for fun?

3D illustration is inside of me, it is my work. My hobbies are music and reading about the ancient civilizations.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in architectural design?

To study and to study..... to be involved in research and in being helpful to others. Share knowledge
and do not confine yourself only to projects.

What are the biggest problems that occur with 3D illustration?

People are confusing illustration with photo-realism. Illustration is an art . These days though so many people wants so much realism in an image that the beauty of the art is lost. It's nice to have realism, but that doesn't mean it has to be like a photograph.
